I need a few tips on how to know when I have the proper amount of front weights on my new 2WD JD 790. I am new to the wonderful world of CUTs. I mow with a Frontier 5' Grooming Mower which weighs 611 lbs. I have 4 weights on the front which seems ok so far... but I am well aware of Murphy's Law!
Front tires are the standard narrow ribbed type which cut into the sod if it is moist. This is often the case in Mississippi. Should I consider more turf friendly tires/wheels? Will I be too front-heavy if I add another weight until I get wider tires? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please see my question dated 7-19.

runslikeadeere, You have me wondering what type of rear tires you have, being you mentioned the front tires being rib tires my guess is you have R1, (regular farm tractor tread desigh all around). If the rear tires don't leave an objectional tread mark in the lawn you could likely put R3 (turf type tires) on the front. You may have to switch rins and all for clearance reasons with out spending an awfull lot of money. Changing rears can get real pricey not only for the tires but it's unlikely that your curent rim will work out unless your wheel has an adjustable trad feature wher they could be moved out a notch or two for clearance. Back to your original question, If you replace the front tires with a wide flat type tread pattern you can likely add as many weights as the bracket will hold for a more secure feeling. hope this helps. I'm thinking those skinny rib tires are more suitable for working row crops. A wider front tire would be better for mowing. ....

As Mark mentioned, the skinny rib front tires are a general suited ag tire. The fact that you say the front tires "cut into the sod if it is moist" makes me wonder if in fact the tires are skidding across the turf due to insufficient weight on the front. The turf tires would definitely be much more gentle on the turf but if you already have more front weights; I would suggest experimenting and adding a one or two more front weights and observe if you are still having the turf cutting problem. You may need to even add more than the two to achieve the desired result. ....

Frank: The rear tires are R1 but these do not seem to be a problem as they do not seem to cut the sod like the front ones do. The mower wheels seem to follow in the front tire groove also compounding the problem. Wider, R3 tires on the front, I suppose will also handle the extra weight on the front better, if I should add more. I will stick to the R1s on the rear as I plan to add other attachments in the future as my budget permits. In any case, thanks for the advice. ....
